Introduction to the Selected Technology Topic

Telehealth videoconferencing systems play a vital role in expanding patient access to care, enhancing clinical outcomes, and safeguarding patient safety. As remote healthcare demand grows—particularly for individuals in rural or underserved communities—these systems help overcome obstacles to prompt medical attention and support models of patient-centered care.

By enabling real-time interactions between patients and providers, videoconferencing fosters continuity of care and can decrease hospital readmissions. To explore its impact on nursing practice, I reviewed literature from PubMed, CINAHL, and ScienceDirect using search terms such as “telehealth videoconferencing in nursing,” “videoconferencing system and patient safety,” and “telehealth technology in quality care.” This process yielded peer-reviewed studies that illuminate how these platforms influence interdisciplinary collaboration and patient outcomes.

However, reliance on screens may challenge the establishment of therapeutic rapport.Nurses must balance the benefits of improved access with strategies to build strong therapeutic relationships. Interdisciplinary teams can use these insights to tailor telehealth interventions for vulnerable youth.

Cybersecurity vulnerabilities pose risks to patient data if not managed appropriately.Nurses should select platforms that comply with regional regulations and prioritize security, supporting remote consultations and patient education for chronic disease management.

VC accelerates out-of-hours access to care and connects residents with specialized expertise.Successful adoption requires organizational engagement, staff training, and fostering psychological safety to enhance teamwork and continuous learning in nursing homes.

A focus group study. BJGP Open, 7(3). https://doi.org/10.3399/bjgpo.2023.0025GP perspectives on post-pandemic VC in urgent care.Video consultations complement telephone triage by improving diagnostic accuracy, streamlining referrals, and facilitating visual assessments. They strengthen patient rapport and allow inclusion of remote colleagues.Nurses can leverage VC to optimize triage, coordinate interdisciplinary input, and undergo one-to-one training to maximize the technology’s benefits in urgent care environments.

(2023). Exploring the impact of patient, physician and technology factors on patient video consultation satisfaction. Digital Health, 9. https://doi.org/10.1177/20552076231203887Determinants of patient satisfaction with video consultations.Satisfaction hinges on reliable technology, quality of physician communication, and reduced travel burdens; demographic variables showed no significant effects.Nurses should focus on troubleshooting technical issues and enhancing communication skills during VC to boost patient engagement, support remote monitoring, and facilitate follow-up care.

    Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Integrating AI into videoconferencing can streamline triage, analyze health data for personalized care recommendations, and provide real-time captioning to improve accessibility for patients with hearing impairments (Burrell, 2023). Predictive analytics powered by AI can detect early signs of deterioration, reducing readmission rates. Moreover, AI chatbots can handle routine inquiries—such as medication adjustments and basic health checks—thus allowing nurses to devote more time to complex, patient-centered tasks (Burrell, 2023).

AI tools also help minimize technical disruptions by monitoring connection quality and suggesting troubleshooting steps, thereby enhancing patient–provider communication—a critical factor in VC satisfaction (Tenfelde et al., 2023).

    Summary of Recommendation

Evidence consistently shows that videoconferencing enhances access, safety, and quality of care by facilitating timely interventions, reducing travel-related risks, and broadening access to specialists. For successful implementation, organizations must address cybersecurity concerns, foster therapeutic rapport, and attend to leadership engagement, infrastructure, and staff training (Cubo et al., 2021; Newbould et al., 2021). Policies that guarantee data protection and compliance, combined with a culture of innovation and ongoing education, empower healthcare teams to utilize VC effectively (Payne & Clarke, 2023).

    Justifying the Implementation of Videoconferencing

Implementing videoconferencing is justified by demonstrations of higher patient satisfaction, better care coordination, and increased service accessibility. When enhanced with AI, VC streamlines workflows, supports remote monitoring, and eases burden on healthcare systems (Burrell, 2023). With strong leadership, robust technical infrastructure, and comprehensive staff training, VC fosters organizational efficiency and staff retention while improving patient outcomes.
