    Locating Credible Databases and Research

Many chronic diseases are prevalent across the nations worldwide. These diseases affect millions of people every day and impair their healthy living.  Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the chronic diseases which needs ongoing treatment and management. Majorly diabetes is of two types, type 1 diabetes, and type 2 diabetes. In the former, insufficient insulin production is done by the pancreatic cells of the body. While in type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance is the cause of hyperglycemia.

In this type, cells are producing sufficient insulin but the body is unable to utilize it due to resistance development. It requires social, economic, and human resources for its adequate treatment and management. This poses different challenges to the nurses who are actively managing disease & providing care treatments and to patients being financially affected due to the disease (Khan et al., 2019). Every day healthcare systems are bringing innovative ideas and research to manage and treat diabetes so that diabetics can live their life like others without living at the mercy of diabetes where any severe fluctuation in glycemic control can implicate harmful and even lethal consequences.

Therefore, treating diabetes requires appropriate knowledge based on credible research and authenticity and every nurse should implement the practices based on credible databases and research.  It is important that nurses are able to locate credible data and knowledge from authentic sources and this article throws light on locating different databases which are credible and authentic to take information from and which can be used by nurses for treating and managing diabetes.

Communication and Collaboration Strategies for Nurses to Research and Access Resources

Research methodology is an important subject for nurses in order to provide credible treatment and management to diabetes patients. Various ways can be implemented to promote the use of research in nursing units such as enhancing communication and collaboration among nurses to motivate them to increase the use of research and access the available credible resources in a way that can promote patient safety and diabetics’ improvement and also enhance self-belief in nurses that they are providing correct treatment and managing diabetes following the right ways. Communication and collaboration strategies that can enhance nurses’ motivation to utilize and access the research resources are as follows:

    • Appropriate and understandable jargon-led communication: Many times communication is not grasped properly due to the jargon which is incomprehensible to other nurses. It is important for senior nurses to communicate in an understandable and appropriate jargon which is commonly used by all fellow nurses (Adjoe & Kimani, 2020).
    • Following inquiry-based learning: Inquiry-based learning can be implemented among nurses which can help apprentice nurses to follow their curiosities by providing them with appropriate tools and research assessments to enhance learning. These learning guides can be nurse-selected case studies and research articles published in well-known and authentic journals (Younas et al., 2022). In this case, nurses can ask diabetes-related questions and raise their curiosities concerned to diabetes and further progress the learning.
    • Implementing digital collaborative learning: The use of digital apps for communication and collaboration in teaching research methodology can be a great tool for nurses to motivate nurses to use research and access resources. It promotes nursing interpersonal interactions and collaborative skills along with problem-solving skills, satisfaction, and motivation for learning (Männistö et al., 2019). Nurses can share diabetes-related knowledge and data using digital social apps and enhance knowledge, communication, and collaboration.
    • Timely dissemination of information: Another strategy to enhance communication is timely dissemination of information where all nurses should disseminate any required information and content timely and follow a regulated communication schedule (Zhou et al., 2022).

The implementation of these strategies will benefit the nurses in developing positive interprofessional competencies as the senior and trainee nurses get to interact and enhance learning as they grow together in a positive environment where learning and benefitting the patients and improving their health is the goal. Trainee nurses gather information from senior skilled and experienced nurses and implement them in their working life and enhance professional competencies. This improves their practice and benefits both the nurses and society.

The Best Places to Complete Research Within the Workplace Environment

Some of the best places for a nurse to complete the research within the workplace environment can be the research offices, medical libraries, and patient care areas. The reason for utilizing these places within the workplace environment is that these areas will provide particular resources on Diabetes. Patient care areas will be best for research using hands-on experiences and evaluating patients’ conditions for developing clinical expertise in the domain. These places provide nurses with extensive knowledge on the use of innovative care treatments and interventions which can be implemented in the clinical areas for treating diabetic patients with the best available, evidence-based, and effective treatment methods.

The types of resources that healthcare professionals including nurses can utilize to find pertinent information for diagnosis can be medical journals such as The Lancet Diabetes &   Endocrinology, Diabetologia, Diabetes Care, Nature Reviews Endocrinology, etc, that l provide evidence-based research on diabetes and other endocrine diseases. Furthermore, official governmental websites devoted to health and medical conditions such as CDC, WHO, and American Diabetes Association, etc, can provide authentic information about the diagnosis of diseases. While assessing these online resources, it is essential to pick credible and relevant sources, which will be evaluated on the basis of CRAAP criteria (currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose). Additionally, electronic medical records (EMR) are another resource from which health professionals can seek information about patient’s medical history and past diagnoses.

The Five Credible Sources for Diabetes Mellitus

There is immense data available on diabetes mellitus but nurses can draw out credible and authentic data from credible sources like governmental organizations working for diabetes management and treatment such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). Other than these website-based sources, nurses can generate data from authentic journals such as The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Diabetologia, Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics, and Nutrition & Diabetes ordered from the most useful journals for nurses to the least useful.  All of these credible databases are providing benefits to new nurses to gather recent credible knowledge and implement it into practice for the best patient outcomes in diabetes.

The Reasons for These Five Sources to Be the Best Evidence

The online databases of diabetes research resources described earlier are authentic and credible from which nurses can take evidence-based information for the proper treatment and management of diabetes. The reasons for these five sources to be the best evidence are as follows:

    • Websites such as WHO and CDC are credible as the government is the main authority of their management and provides the information only on the basis of authentic research and when the information is viable for healthcare systems.
    • Other journals such as  The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Diabetologia, Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics, and Nutrition & Diabetes are internationally authentic journals that provide peer-reviewed articles on diabetes which is the topic of our interest and fulfill all the criteria of CRAAP methodology of evaluating resources. Nurses find them useful for the implementation of authentic knowledge in diabetics’ care.

    Conclusion

Chronic diseases such as diabetes demand continuous treatment and management for better health in diabetics. It is crucial for nurses to locate databases of research resources that can provide them with authentic information so they can implement that information in taking care of diabetics. Nurses can locate the resources which are credible for the treatment and management of diabetes. These credible resources are WHO, CDC, and other journals such as The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Diabetologia, Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics, and Nutrition & Diabetes. All these journals follow the CRAAP criteria and are useful in the practice of nurses in healthcare systems.
