Healthcare Workforce Shortage: Impact and Solutions
The shortage of doctors, nurses, and allied health workers is a growing crisis worldwide, particularly in the United States. This workforce gap results in increased workload, burnout, and diminished quality of care. Additionally, healthcare costs continue to rise as staffing shortages persist. A major contributor to this crisis is high turnover rates. Studies predict that the nursing workforce could decline by 7.61 million by 2030. In the U.S., the nurse turnover rate stands at 26.9% (Ren et al., 2024). Addressing this issue is crucial to improving patient safety and healthcare services. Research indicates that inadequate nurse staffing increases mortality risk by 2.1–3.2% (Griffiths et al., 2023).
Personal Interest and Professional Experience
The healthcare workforce shortage is an issue of personal and professional significance. It impacts both healthcare workers and patient outcomes. Increased pressure on staff leads to dissatisfaction, burnout, and high turnover. In my professional experience, understaffed medical facilities often struggle with overwhelming patient loads. This situation results in stress, exhaustion, and decreased productivity.

For instance, during my nursing practice, a staff shortage in my unit required me and my colleagues to care for more patients than usual. This led to severe work stress, physical exhaustion, and job dissatisfaction. Ultimately, this affected the quality of patient care. This firsthand experience highlights how workforce shortages harm both healthcare workers’ well-being and the quality of medical services provided.
Research and Selection Process:
To gather relevant research on the healthcare workforce shortage, I used online databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, and ProQuest. The research strategy included keywords like “healthcare workforce shortage,” “nurse and physician shortage,” and “solutions to healthcare staffing crisis.” Despite initial difficulties in finding the most relevant articles, Boolean operators “AND” and “OR” helped refine the search.
Additional keywords such as “staffing shortage and patient safety,” “nurse shortage and burnout,” and “staff retention and care quality” further narrowed the results. To ensure credibility, filters were applied to select only peer-reviewed articles published within the last five years. Ultimately, three scholarly articles were chosen, each analyzing workforce shortages and potential solutions.
Assessing Credibility and Relevance of Sources
Each selected article underwent a credibility assessment. Only peer-reviewed journal articles with reputable authors and evidence-based data were considered. The CRAAP test—Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose—was applied (Muis et al., 2022). Currency ensured the information was recent, while relevance confirmed the articles directly addressed workforce shortages. Authority was established by reviewing the authors’ credentials and the reputation of the journals. Accuracy was determined through evidence-based research and proper citations, while the purpose ensured the articles focused on staffing shortages and solutions.

This article discusses the causes and effects of nursing shortages on patient care and healthcare outcomes. It highlights excessive workloads, high patient-nurse ratios, and burnout as primary factors contributing to workforce depletion. Findings indicate a 31.1% variance in patient mortality rates when a nurse cares for eight versus four patients. Strategies such as improving nurse perceptions, flexible scheduling, salary raises, and overtime policies are suggested to retain staff. While the study offers valuable insights, it lacks a discussion on workforce development programs and their impact on retention.

NURS FPX 4000 Assessment 2
This systematic review examines factors affecting nurse retention, a key issue in workforce shortages. Contributing factors include high job demands, mental fatigue, excessive patient loads, and dissatisfaction with management. Limited professional growth opportunities, negative workplace culture, and inadequate teamwork also drive nurses away. The study emphasizes the importance of supportive work environments in retaining staff. Its findings are valuable for policymakers and healthcare administrators, although it focuses primarily on hospital settings without addressing other healthcare sectors.

Strategies to facilitate improved recruitment, development, and retention of the rural and remote medical workforce: A scoping review. International Journal of Health Policy and Management, 11(10), 2022. https://doi.org/10.34172/ijhpm.2021.160
This article explores strategies to mitigate staffing shortages in rural areas through improved recruitment and retention. It suggests educational interventions such as rural training programs, targeted student selection, and immersive experiences in underserved areas. Other solutions include financial incentives, housing support, and infrastructure improvements. The study provides strong evidence for addressing workforce shortages in remote areas. However, it does not explore how these strategies might be implemented in low-income countries or their scalability across different healthcare systems.
Summary of Learnings: NURS FPX 4000 Assessment 2
Developing an annotated bibliography enhanced my research and critical analysis skills. Evaluating sources through the CRAAP method improved my ability to assess the credibility and relevance of academic resources. Summarizing key findings helped deepen my understanding of the healthcare workforce crisis and potential solutions.
NURS FPX 4000 Assessment 2
Through this research, I discovered that factors like an aging workforce, excessive workloads, and limited career growth contribute to shortages (Marufu et al., 2021). Strategies such as flexible scheduling, salary increases, and workplace improvements can enhance staff retention (Alshahrani, 2022). Additionally, targeted efforts in rural areas, including educational incentives and financial support, are effective in addressing workforce gaps (Noya et al., 2021).
Understanding these aspects provides valuable insights into improving workforce retention and enhancing patient care. The research process has strengthened my ability to analyze healthcare challenges and apply evidence-based solutions in professional practice.
